Hatchback was a site-specific installation done in collaboration with Anthony Hunt at Uplands Gallery, Melbourne Australia in 2003.
The installation consisted of a scale replica of a late 80s Honda Civic hatchback, made from MDF, Pine and acrylic paint.
We wanted to make a real-world sculpture of the car that I owned at the time, reimagined to be an asset from a PS1 game, abandoned and stripped of its tyres.
Another goal was to place an impossible object in the small gallery space. The gallery was located on the first floor of a building in Chinatown, Melbourne which only had narrow staircase access and a very small elevator, It would be impossible to get an object the size of a hatchback car into the space.
So we assembled and painted the car in the gallery space from pre-cut components, kind of like an Ikea furniture kit.
